We uphold this mission by providing services to families who may not otherwise afford the benefits of quality early childhood education.
The MLK Montessori School Mission
Martin Luther King Montessori School ("MLKMS") currently provides a comprehensive full day, full year preschool and kindergarten program for children ages three to six years. One of only two Montessori schools in the United States to offer a quality Montessori education to low-income families at an affordable cost, we’ve enriched the lives of more than 5,000 children since our start in 1968. At MLKMS students receive much more than an academic jumpstart. Representing humanness in all its forms, those who pass through our halls are encouraged to embrace a diverse world and a brighter future.
The Montessori method is a successful method of teaching students in which the students work independently, progress at their own learning pace, and develop social skills along with academic skills that lead to a lifetime of learning. Our school seeks to minimize the fundamental difference between our students and those who received more educational opportunities prior to entering elementary school. Our school environment unifies the social, physical, and academic functioning of the child. It is an important task to provide students with an early and general foundation that includes a positive attitude toward school, inner security, the ability to make decisions, self-discipline, and a sense of responsibility to other members of the class, school, and community. This foundation will enable them to acquire more specialized knowledge and skills throughout their school career.
By promoting an atmosphere that allows all children to develop the skills to compete academically and socially with their kindergarten peers from more advantaged environments, we help build better tomorrows. Our philosophy has been and continues to be that we believe it is better to build a child than to repair an adult. |
