“Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.”

We have a new home

After months of interior remodeling, roof reconstruction, replacement of the HVAC systems and construction of a state of the art playground, Martin Luther King Montessori School (MLKMS) officially re-opened its doors to its permanent home at 6001 South Anthony Boulevard (just south of Paulding) on August 17, 2009.

Our beautiful new building is 8,500 square feet and houses five classrooms, a kitchen, library and office space for 100 preschool children, ten classroom teachers, a nutritionist, and administrative staff.  MLKMS also owns and continues to operate a fleet of school busses with a staff of six to transport our children to and from school.

After six weeks off, teaching staff returned to work on August 3rd and plunged right in to unpacking, arranging and preparing the classrooms for the first day of school.  During this two week time, they also participated in some long hours of staff development including basic Montessori philosophy and characteristics of the Montessori classroom and curriculum they were creating.  Teachers spent a great deal of time discussing the elements of honor and respect that are basic to Montessori philosophy and came up with three main classroom rules that will be used across the building.  They are:

  1. WALK AT ALL TIMES
  2. RESPECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS
  3. USE ALL MATERIALS CORRECTLY

After only four weeks of school, thesephrases can be heard throughout the building!  The children are reminding each other of the rules, helping out classmates in need and learning so many new lessons with our wonderful Montessori materials.

One of the main Montessori principles is that children are born with an inherent, natural love of learning.  At MLKMS, learning is individualized for each child, allowing them to learn at their own pace, mastering the Montessori materials with great excitement and pride of accomplishment whether it be basic practical life skills or a new complex math or language challenge.

Come in and visit our beautiful new facility!  Peek through our classroom windows to fully appreciate and the children’s Montessori school experience.  It is a joy to behold!

On behalf of the Board of Directors and entire staff, welcome to the MLKMS 2009-2010 school year!

Warmly,
Bobbie Golani
Director
