Martin Luther King Montessori School in Fort Wayne has received an $800,000 gift from the
estate of former MLK board member Dr. Robert W. Currie, the school announced.
The nonprofit school’s annual budget is $850,000.
“He (Currie) wanted to make sure children who could not otherwise afford a high-quality
preschool education could get one,” said MLK Director Bobbie Golani. “It’s a very humbling
experience to receive such a generous gift.”
Golani said the school, which serves about 100 children ages 3 to 5, is in the process of
forming an ad-hoc committee to determine the best way to invest the $800,000.
“We want to make sure we do the gift justice,” Golani said. “We want to make sure we’re very
careful, very cautious.”
Currie received his doctorate of medicine from Indiana University and worked in Billings,
Mont., New York City, and Indianapolis, Lafayette and Marion. Upon retirement, he served as a
temporary substitute for other doctors in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.
