MLKMS News for February

Let’s Celebrate!! Phil the Groundhog did not see his shadow this year so we should be seeing spring like weather shortly.  Let’s be thankful for the mild winter that we’ve had, and hope Phil is correct in his weather prediction.

Black History Month

February is widely known as “Black History Month.”  We will be studying some of the great people, who fought for the rights of African Americans, especially our name sake, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  If you happen to be in the building please check out the display of short biography’s posted along the hallway and in the doorway.  Each classroom teacher will have their own projects and ways to educate the children on some of the struggles and people who helped make our country great.  Please check with your classroom teacher if you would like to come in and read or if you have another talent you would like to share with the classroom.  As you’ve probably noticed we have been sending a monthly newsletter from the AAAHSM (African/African American History Society Museum of Allen County), this newsletter is child friendly and gives a little History on some individuals.  Please go over them with your child as an extension of what they are learning in school.

IMPORTANT NOTE: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE FOLLOWING THE PICK UP AND DROP OFF PROCEDURE.  WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY ACCIDENTS ON OUR PROPERTY BECAUSE OF PARENTS NOT FOLLOWING THE GUIDELINES.  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT EVERYONE FOLLOW THE RULES.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE.  RULES NEED TO BE FOLLOWED FOR THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE ESPECIALLY OUR CHILDREN.

Parent Reminders:

  • We apologize, our Black History Month Literacy Night scheduled for February 18th had to be canceled because of a scheduling conflict with our presenter.  If anything changes you will be notified with a flyer. We are still working on getting another presenter, so continue to save the date.

  • February 22-26 is Montessori Education Week you are welcome, as always, to come in and learn about the specific Montessori materials your child is working with.  Work time in the classroom is from 9:30am-11:30am.

  • Make sure your child has an extra change of clothing here that is appropriate for the weather.  We know that sometimes accidents happen and we would like to refrain from calling parents at work/school if it is not necessary.

  • Look for your flyer regarding the Sweetheart Ball.  This is a dance we do every year, last year it was the “Winter Wonderland Ball.”   We want families to be involved and this is one way of doing that.  We will have a father/daughter dance, Mother/son Dance, and other dances that the children love doing these days.  Get your tickets NOW and join the fun!!

GRADUATION

Believe it or not, it is time to get ready for graduation.  We will be ordering supplies soon. If your child is a graduate this year (he/she will turn 5 before August 1), please look for notices about when fees are due and graduation plans.  We will be doing a spring fundraiser to raise the majority of funds to pay for the cost of the venue and other supplies needed for our annual graduation and graduation party.  Parents, please ask what you can do to help.
